    • 2021...Pretty Good Little Sedan

Good, zippy car. Utilitiarian interior; it's fine. (I have the most stripped-down model possible). I guess it's normal for a sedan to have no rear wiper (I didn't notice this at purchase); it's a little problematic (the rain doesn't just roll right off) BUT I'm in a warm climate with not tons of rain. The radio is fine; sone people complina about it. It's...a radio. More like a 3.5 or so now, because in early April 2026 (car bought in December 2020), not even 25,000 miles on it, I went for an oil change and my mechanic (independent) spotted a leaking rear strut or shock or both; I did see it (sorry; I know there is a difference) and gave me a $700+ estimate. Now, I realize he wants to make money. He also did not tell me about "good will" repairs (I'm pretty mad about that and will take it up with him, but it's not a Subaru issue; however, Subaru won't shout about it...of course not). When the dealership looked at the estimate, though, they said they could not come in that low. So who knows? The important part is that I am currently pursuing good will repairs, and SO FAR Subaru USA has been great to deal with (they need a dealer dx and I just have to submit it); they opened the case for me. This should NOT be happening at 25,000 miles (less than that) with great care taken; I don't care about the passage of time. Five years or so is really short (dealership tried to tell me that could be a factor...um, I doubt it). BUT dealership gave me a loaner. It's not up to them to decide if Subaru will pay for this issue. They do need to stand by the Legacy; I don't care that it's been discontinued for 2026.

It is a very good reliable car that handles well (for the most part) and gives combined mileage of 25+mpg. Overall, I consider this car to be much above average based on my 2+ yr of ownership. Pros: 1) The fulltime symmetrical AWD powertrain and confidant handling in all weather conditions. Very stable at 80+ mph. 2) The Eyesight system is great when used with adaptive cruise control for those long drives. Sometimes the stopping can be a bit harsh (even with max distance) and I end up taking over the braking. It does well in slow speed stop and go and handles well when others sneak in front of you. 3) Great space for a sedan of this class in the front and back. I have done a few long distance trips with 5 adults. It's a bit tight for 3 in the back, but not terrible. 4) Seats are not very comfortable for road trips. 5) Steering responsive headlights. 6) Trunk space is huge and fits a lot of stuff. 7) Spare tire in the trunk with jack. 8) Basic infotainment system that works well (for the most part) and can connect to multiple phones at the same time. 9) Good accessories that can be installed by DIY-ers. I enjoyed the roof racks, fog lights, and auto-dimming outside mirrors. 10) Great storage for driver, and passengers. 11) MySubaru app and the integration with car seems to work very well for the most part. I love the car status information that shows actual ODO, tire pressure, fuel level and other diagnostic info by system. Cons: 1) Slow infotainment system. Sometimes I have to wait 5+ seconds for it to respond to touch/button. 2) Climate control baked into the infotainment system is a terrible idea IMO. Once the big screen/system failed to boot and was showing that wheel of death. It disabled all other systems in the car, Eyesight, Cruise, Climate and it stayed that way for the entire trip of 4+ hours. It literally became a base model car from the 90s. But it kept driving as the dash is still analog. 3) There's no trunk open option at the trunk lid. Trunk can be opened from dash or from the key. Trunk hinges are squeaky only after a few months. 4) Low fidelity and quality speakers in the doors. I ended up upgrading the front speakers and got a much better sound. 5) Noisy interior with significant engine noise. 6) CVT Transmission can be a bit jerky at times. 7) Quality issues in the engine, it had a rattle from day-1 when started cold after sitting for a day or more. 8) Subaru constantly sends driving data from the car and there's no options to participate.

For 4 years now I have been enjoying my Touring XT Legacy. It has a spirited, comfortable ride with very good fuel economy. It also has a quiet cabin and a fine sound system. The suspension system handles things like speed bumps very nicely.
